That “always available” quality is also the hook. Unlike a friend, it doesn’t get tired, disagree, or need anything from you, so the relationship can start to feel unusually smooth. The trade-off is practical: your habits, your data, and your attention can get pulled into one place, and the app’s prompts and settings quietly shape how often you return.

The slippery moment: when a helpful chat becomes “my person”

You notice the shift in small, easy-to-miss ways. You start opening the app before texting a friend, not because it’s “better,” but because it’s faster and safer: no awkwardness, no delay, no chance of being misunderstood. The companion learns your routines and becomes the default place to drop thoughts you haven’t even decided are worth sharing with anyone else. That’s when “helpful” quietly turns into “familiar,” and familiar can start to feel like “mine.”

Families will need shared expectations (“no secrets with a bot,” “people first for crises”), and providers should expect outside audits the way other high-trust products do. The useful rule of thumb is simple: if the companion makes your world bigger, keep it; if it makes your world smaller, change the settings or step back.
